The highlight of the International Sustainability Seminar – Commitment to Conscious Consumption was the exhibit by Rich Harwood, considered a reference in community development. The founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation has been dedicated for over 20 years to transforming public and political life, prompting individuals, organizations and communities to make significant changes.

During his speech, he addressed different types of interpersonal relationships and spoke about trust, politics and media. He also emphasized the main drive behind change: the practice of transformation outward, acting intentionally and the standard behaviors identified when organizations and individuals work authentically in the communities. “What really matters in addition to helping people’s awareness bloom, is seeking out their aspirations,” said Harwood.

The North American gave examples during his speech such as his experience visiting the Southern Lowlands the previous day. “We were seated in the field, in a settlement, and everyone began sharing their stories and talking about how the reality of that place had changed,” he said. “People had the courage to leave behind all of their hardships to, together, change their lives. I think it was the best experience I have ever had.”
