The work of the state’s rural producers is recognized each year during the award “The Highlights of the Agribusiness in Bahia.” Of the 22 winners for 2013, Hercílio Nascimento, a farmer from Vale do Jiquiriçá and one of the 100 members of the Bahia State Manioc Starch Producers’ Cooperative (COOPAMIDO), was the highlight in the Manioc category.

Described as a “reference in terms of commitment, persistence and courage” by Jairo Souza, President of COOPAMIDO, Hercílio Nascimento believes that his life has improved since he became a cooperative member. “The different types of crops and the new techniques used are making a difference in terms of our result,” said Souza.

COOPAMIDO is part of the Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental Protection Area Mosaic Program for Development and Growth Integrated with Sustainability (PDCIS), supported by the Odebrecht Foundation and public and private partners.
